NJ sales tax filing

We prepare and file your New Jersey sales tax returns from reconciled books, on time every quarter, so the tax you collect is the tax you report.

New Jersey sales tax, handled every quarter

If you sell taxable goods or services in New Jersey, the sales tax you collect is not your money: you hold it for the state until the return is due. Filing sounds simple until you have several sales channels, exempt and taxable items, refunds and a QuickBooks liability that does not match what was filed. Then a quarter slips, and a notice arrives.

Our NJ sales tax filing service takes that off your list. We reconcile your sales each period, prepare the return from your books and file it on time. We work with businesses in Rochelle Park and across Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Hudson and Morris counties, and online with sellers anywhere in the U.S. who have a New Jersey filing obligation.

How NJ sales tax works

New Jersey sales tax is currently charged at a rate of 6.625%. It applies to most sales of tangible personal property, specified digital products and certain services, unless New Jersey law exempts them. A few rules every seller should know:

  • Register before you collect. Businesses that sell taxable goods or services in New Jersey must register with the state. If you have not, start with your NJ business registration.
  • File every quarter. Each quarter is reported on Form ST-50, even when no tax is due or no sales were made.
  • Due on the 20th. Returns and payments are due by the 20th day of the month after the period ends, as the NJ Sales and Use Tax Filing Chart shows. A weekend or holiday moves the date to the next business day.
  • Electronic only. Returns are filed through the New Jersey online tax portal and payments are made electronically.

Our NJ sales tax guide covers what is taxable, use tax and the reduced UEZ rate in more detail.

What our sales tax service includes

Quarterly returns and monthly payments

We prepare and file your quarterly ST-50 return every quarter. If your business collected more than $30,000 in New Jersey sales and use tax in the prior calendar year, and more than $500 in the first or second month of a quarter, monthly payments are also required for those months. We track which months need a payment and remind you before each due date.

Sales tax tied to your books

A sales tax return is only as accurate as the sales data behind it. We reconcile taxable sales, exempt sales and tax collected in QuickBooks against your point-of-sale, e-commerce and bank records, so the liability in your books equals what you report. That is easiest when we also keep your books with our monthly bookkeeping service.

Missed returns and state notices

If quarters were missed or filed wrong, we prepare the missing returns and help you reply to letters from the New Jersey Division of Taxation. When the books behind those quarters are incomplete, we rebuild them first with catch-up bookkeeping.

Setup for new sellers

For new businesses we configure sales tax in QuickBooks so it is calculated on invoices and tracked as a liability from the first sale. Our QuickBooks setup service covers this together with your chart of accounts and bank feeds.

Online sellers and remote sellers

Under New Jersey’s remote seller rules, businesses outside New Jersey that ship taxable products or services to New Jersey customers must register and collect if their gross revenue from those sales exceeds $100,000, or they make 200 or more separate sales into the state, in the current or prior calendar year. Sales made through a marketplace are generally collected and remitted by the marketplace facilitator, but your own website sales are your responsibility. We help you work out whether you have crossed the threshold and keep your filings in line once you register.

Why accurate sales tax matters

Sales tax that was collected but not reported is one of the fastest ways for a small business to end up with state penalties and interest. Clean, reconciled sales tax also feeds directly into your business tax return, because collected tax is a liability, not income. Most of our sales tax clients are small businesses in New Jersey such as restaurants and retail stores that want one place for books and filings.

Sales tax looks different in every industry: see how it works for online sellers, retail stores, restaurants and gas station convenience stores.

Frequently asked questions

New Jersey's sales tax rate is currently 6.625%. It applies to most sales of tangible personal property, specified digital products and certain services, unless a specific exemption applies under New Jersey law. Whether your particular products or services are taxable is something we review with you before the first filing.

Quarterly returns (Form ST-50) and payments are due by the 20th day of the month after the quarter ends: April 20, July 20, October 20 and January 20. If the due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day. Larger collectors may also owe monthly payments, due by the 20th of the following month.

Yes. New Jersey requires a quarterly return for every quarter you are registered, even if no tax is due and no sales were made. Missing a zero return can still lead to penalties and notices, which is why we file every quarter for our clients whether or not there were taxable sales.

New Jersey requires sales and use tax returns to be filed electronically through the state's online tax portal, and payments must also be made electronically, for example by e-check or credit card. When we file for you, we prepare the return from your books, file it electronically and send you the confirmation.

Monthly payments apply if your business collected more than $30,000 in New Jersey sales and use tax in the prior calendar year and more than $500 in the first or second month of the current quarter. Otherwise the tax for the whole quarter is paid with the quarterly return.

A remote seller must register and collect if its gross revenue from sales delivered into New Jersey exceeds $100,000, or it makes 200 or more separate sales into the state, in the current or prior calendar year. Sales made through a marketplace are generally taxed by the marketplace facilitator instead.

Late returns and late payments can lead to penalties and interest from the New Jersey Division of Taxation, and they grow the longer a return stays open. If you have missed quarters, it is usually better to file them as soon as possible. We can prepare the missing returns and help you respond to any letters from the state.
